Melbourne Disc Golf Club Inc. (MDGC) is excited to announce that the club has been successful in receiving three funding grants to promote the sport of Disc Golf in Victoria.
Two of these grants have a particular focus on the participation of Women in the Sport – these two grants enable the club to work with Women members to gain skills and accreditation in event management, coaching and tournament administration.
The grants are as follows:
Royal Park Temporary Golf Course
City of Melbourne 2021 Connected Communities Grants
Installation of a temporary Disc Golf Course at Royal Park for a period of 12 weeks, to encourage small groups and individuals to participate in Disc Golf, in a relaxed, social and or educational environment. In line with City of Melbourne and VicHealth’s position regarding public health, Disc Golf is a fantastic way to keep people active, in these shared community spaces which connect people.
MDGC will support the initiative with installation of the temporary course, marketing, ‘Come ‘N Try’ sessions, and social game days.
‘Changing the Game’ – Women + Melbourne Disc Golf Club
Change Our Game Community Activation Grants Round 2 – Office for Women in Sport & Recreation
MDGC will develop and implement two Women’s Disc Golf ‘Come ‘N Try’ days, targeting Women aged 18 and older, inclusive of women of all abilities and backgrounds.
Women members will be assisted to co-coordinate these events, gaining skills and accreditation in coaching and event management. Ongoing participation pathways will be implemented to suit the target group.
Two “Come ‘N Try Disc Golf” events will be held, one in the City of Kingston and one in the City of Maribyrnong, working closely with both local governments, and forming partnerships with other organisations.
“Women and girls deserve equal opportunities to lead on and off the field,” said Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence said. “We’re making sure they feel comfortable and confident when it comes to getting involved in sport and pursuing their goals.”
“Active Women – Disc Golf”
Sporting Club Grant Program – Sport and Recreation Victoria
Melbourne Disc Golf Club (MDGC) will develop and implement participation programs targeting less-active women over the age of 30. The funding will allow us to develop facilitator and coaching training for our current female members, marketing materials aimed at our target audience, and ongoing casual participation pathways that suit the audience.
Programs will be held at Bald Hill Disc Golf Course – City of Kingston & Stony Creek Disc Golf Course – City of Maribyrnong, with the aim of replicating these programs at other courses in Victoria in later months.
MDGC President, Jeff Brunsting told us that, “this is a wonderful opportunity to grow the sport in Melbourne, particularly with the focus on female players.” Gail Lynch, the driving force behind the Women’s projects and founder of Flying Disc Golf Sports in Australia, a disc golfer with a history dating back to the 1970s added, “It’s just wonderful to get this support for our sport and we look forward to a huge increase in the participation by women.”
MDGC plans to initiate these programs in the 2021-2022 period.
MDGC offers thanks to the Office for Women in Sport & Recreation, Sport and Recreation Victoria and the City of Melbourne for these grants and the opportunities they provide.
Thanks also to Maribyrnong City Council (Rick Morris – Participation Officer), Kingston City Council, and Australian Disc Golf (ADG) who provided letters of support for these grants. Thanks also to Ultimate Victoria and MDCG Committee Members who worked to get these grant applications finalised and submitted.
